Shield of Solaris new magic item for Dungeons and Dragons

This magic shield for Dungeons & Dragons can bash or slash opponents. Its sun powers grow stronger as your D&D character grows in levels.

Shield of Solaris

Armor (shield), rare [Tier 2]
(requires attunement)

Damage: 1d6+1 bludgeoning or slashing

Weight: 6 lbs.

Properties: Heavy

Once wielded by Solaris, a celestial who declared himself the Sun King, this metal shield has a glowing red gem in the center and sharp golden rays on the edge. Wielding the shield increases your Armor Class by 2.

You have a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.

Radiant Shield. As a bonus action, you can create a barrier of light around the shield for 1 minute. While it is active, the radiant shield grants half cover to you and any friendly creature within 5 feet of you. This feature can be used a number of times per day equal to your proficiency bonus.

Shield Bash. When you take the Attack action on your turn, you can replace one of your attacks with a shield bash, targeting one creature you can see within 5 feet of yourself. The target must succeed a Strength saving throw (DC equals 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Strength modifier) or take 1d6+1 bludgeoning damage and be knocked prone. You can use Shield Bash only once per turn.

Shield Slash. When you take the Attack action on your turn, you can use your bonus action to make a melee attack with the edge of the shield, targeting one creature you can see within 5 feet of yourself. On a hit, the target takes 1d6+1 slashing damage.

Radiant Resistance. While wielding the shield, you have resistance to fire and radiant damage.

Solar Blast. As an action, you can make a beam of brilliant light blast from the shield’s gem in a 5-foot-wide, 60-foot-long line. Each creature in the line must make a DC 14 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 6d8 radiant damage and is blinded until your next turn. On a successful save, it takes half as much damage and isn’t blinded. This feature can be used a number of times per day equal to your proficiency bonus.

Legendary [Tier 4] upgrade

Spellcasting. The Shield of Solaris has 10 charges and regains 1d6 + 4 expended charges each day at dawn. You can use an action to expend 1 or more of its charges to cast one of the following spells from it: shield (1 charge), protection from energy (3 charges), or globe of invulnerability (6 charges).

Power Tiers

To help Game Masters determine which player character levels a magic item is appropriate for, each item is assigned a power tier.

Tier 1: Levels 1 – 4
Common and Uncommon items for characters still learning their abilities.

Tier 2: Levels 5 – 10
Uncommon and Rare items for characters who are seasoned adventurers.

Tier 3: Levels 11 – 16
Very Rare items for characters who are established masters of their class.

Tier 4: Levels 17 +
Legendary items for characters who are like superheroes or demigods.

An item’s power tier is only a suggestion, and the GM should consider how each item would best fit with their campaign and player characters.
