Just in time for Halloween, today we have a D&D magic item inspired by the Tall Man’s deadly flying spheres in the Phantasm horror series. Add this magic weapon to your Dungeons and Dragons campaign for horror-inspired mayhem!
Razor Orb
Weapon (orb), rare (requires attunement)
This metal orb is a 1 lb simple ranged weapon (Range 30/120) that does 2d4 damage.
You can use a bonus action to throw the orb and speak the command word. When you do so, spinning disc-shaped blades extend from the orb. The orb flies up to 30 feet, and attacks one creature of your choice within 5 feet of it. The orb uses your ranged attack roll and ability score modifier to damage rolls.
While the orb hovers, you can use a bonus action to cause it to fly up to 30 feet to another spot within 30 feet of you. As part of the same bonus action, you can cause the orb to attack one creature within 5 feet of it.
After the orb attacks for the fourth time, the blades retract and it flies up to 30 feet to return to your hand. If you have no hand free, it falls to the ground at your feet. If the orb has no unobstructed path to you, it moves as close to you as it can and then falls to the ground.
This item is a horror themed version of the Dancing Sword magic item in the Dungeons & Dragons basic rules. The Razor Orb could also be a good ranged weapon for a rogue who wants to use their bonus action for a ranged attack.
