Our final homebrew post of 2022 is a new magic item created for my home campaign “Rage of the Dragon Emperor”. Kyrryk the Mad, the infamous Dragon Emperor of Caliphare, used the Mace of Domination in his brutal rise to power.
Mace of Domination
Weapon (mace), very rare (requires attunement)
You gain a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.
While attuned to and holding this weapon, you can use an action to cast Dominate Beast at 7th level (concentration, 8 hour duration), Dominate Person at 7th level (concentration, 1 hour duration), or Dominate Monster at 8th level (1 hour duration). The target’s Wisdom saving throw has a DC 15 or your spell DC, whichever is higher. This property can’t be used again until the next dusk.
Proficiency with a mace allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.
The Mace of Domination is the perfect magic weapon for a bad guy in your Dungeons & Dragons campaign. However, it can also be used by higher level player characters who are into domination. No bard jokes, please.
In D&D 5e, when you cast a Dominate spell on a creature (beast, person, or monster), the creature is charmed and you have a telepathic link with it as long as the two of you are on the same plane of existence. This makes it extremely useful for spying or sending a dominated creature on a mission.
