This new magic item for Dungeons & Dragons is a sword with a gooey, translucent blade that gains new ooze powers as you gain levels.
Gelatinous Blade
Weapon (longsword), rare [Tier 2]
(requires attunement)
Damage: 1d8+1 slashing
Weight: 3 lbs.
Properties: Versatile (1d10+1 slashing)
The translucent, jelly-like blade of this sword looks soft, but it contains the dangerous powers of oozes. While attuned to the sword, you have a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.
Pseudopod Lash. Once per turn, you can speak a command word to transform the blade into a gelatinous pseudopod. The reach extends to 10 feet and a successful attack deals 1d10+1 bludgeoning damage plus 2d6 acid damage. This feature can be used a number of times per day equal to your proficiency bonus.
Very Rare [Tier 3] upgrade
When you achieve level 10 while attuned to the sword, you have resistance to acid damage. You also have a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.
Pseudopod Snare. When you hit a creature that is Large or smaller with the gelatinous blade, you can attempt to restrain the creature instead of dealing damage. The target must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or become restrained. A target restrained by the pseudopod can use an action to make a DC 15 Strength or Dexterity check (target’s choice). On a success, the creature is no longer restrained.
Gelatinous Gob. You can replace any melee attack using the blade with a ranged attack to hurl a gob of corrosive goo at one target within 60 feet. A successful attack deals 1d8+2 acid damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or be restrained until the end of the creature’s next turn.
Legendary [Tier 4] upgrade
When you achieve level 17 while attuned to the sword, you have immunity to acid damage. You also have a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.
Improved Pseudopod Lash. You can speak a command word to transform the blade into a gelatinous pseudopod for up to 3 attacks per turn. The reach extends to 15 feet and a successful attack deals 2d10+3 bludgeoning damage plus 4d6 acid damage.
Gelatinous Form. You and any equipment you are wearing or carrying take on an amorphous form for up to 1 hour. While in this form, you can move through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide without squeezing. You can climb difficult surfaces, including upside down on ceilings, without needing to make an ability check. This feature can be used a number of times per day equal to your proficiency bonus.
Power Tiers
To help Game Masters determine which player character levels a magic item is appropriate for, each item is assigned a power tier.
Tier 1: Levels 1 – 4
Common and Uncommon items for characters still learning their abilities.
Tier 2: Levels 5 – 10
Uncommon and Rare items for characters who are seasoned adventurers.
Tier 3: Levels 11 – 16
Very Rare items for characters who are established masters of their class.
Tier 4: Levels 17 +
Legendary items for characters who are like superheroes or demigods.
An item’s power tier is only a suggestion, and the GM should consider how each item would best fit with their campaign and player characters.
