Psychometry spell for Dungeons and Dragons

This new spell for Dungeons & Dragons lets your D&D character see into the past by touching an object. Psychometry is defined as “divination of facts concerning an object or its owner through contact with or proximity to the object.”


Psychometry

Level 1 Divination (Sorcerer, Wizard)

Casting Time: 1 minute or Ritual
Range: Touch
Components: V, S
Duration: Instantaneous

You touch an object and look into its past. You can learn one thing about the object, a creature that has touched it, or an event that happened within 10 feet of the object. 

Psychometry can not Identify a magic item, but it can tell you when it was last used or who touched it. You are able to look back 1 hour, or more at higher levels. You can not see into the past farther than when an object was created.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, you can increase the amount of time you can see into the past.

2nd level: 1 day.
3rd level: 1 week.
4th level: 1 month.
5th level: 1 year.
6th level: 1 decade.
7th level: 1 century.
8th level: 1 millennium.
9th level: No limit up to the object’s creation.

Psychometry can be useful for learning about people, places, or events related to an item. In your D&D campaigns, a Sorcerer or Wizard character can cast this spell and learn important information, such as:

  • The identity of the last person to use the object.
  • The date the object was last used.
  • Where the object was created or last used.
  • An event that happened within 10 feet of the object.

Other pertinent information may be learned, at the Game Master’s discretion.
